The Cherry Tree (L’amandier)

I had a spreading cherry
Cherry tree
I had a spreading cherry
Cherry tree
For no more than the delight
Of any sweetheart to-be
I was growing cherries bright
What a delightful hobby.

A pretty little blackbird
In a skirt
A pretty little blackbird
In a skirt
Told me “I have a sweet tooth
With a craving for cherry
My lips are sweeter in truth
I will pay kiss and carry.”

Sweeter deal I never heard
Little bird
Sweeter deal I never heard
Little bird
Flutter your wings up on high
Any fruit in sight will do
Then alight back on my thigh
And give me my kisses due.

When she had eaten all up
Filled her cup
When she had eaten all up
Filled her cup
I will pay you back she said
My adorable numbskull
As fully as I am fed
When you fly up like a gull.

Come and catch me if you please
Did she tease
Come and catch me if you please
Did she tease
But be forewarned if you fall
For you no tear I will shed
If you answer your last call
I will not cry that you’re dead.

She had picked at all my fruit
What a loot
She had picked at all my fruit
What a loot
She had a peck, a nibble
No cherry stone left unturned
But she paid without a quibble
Oh what a handsome return.

And our lips met as they might
Day and night
And our lips met as they might
Day and night
Till the sky filled with thunder
Lightning hit the cherry trunk
Struck my tree down to cinder
And rains our little love sunk.
