In the shade of a maiden’s love (x2)
Rested its wing a mourning dove (x2)
While she awaited the bounty
Befallen a sleeping beauty.

I took it into my province (x2)
To be the liberating prince (x2)
Brushing against her fingertips
I leaned over to kiss her lips.

But thanks to a misguided bird (x2)
A magic kiss never occurred (x2)
It cried the alarm with a start
As if I were to steal her heart.

The blaring calls of that pigeon (x2)
Rang out across the whole region (x2)
Everyone, father included
Ran to where she lay secluded.

Such a ballyhoo, such ado (x2)
Broke the spell and bid it adieu (x2)
Denying an enchanted bliss
She sealed off her heart to my kiss.

And ever since that rueful day (x2)
I have taken the hunter’s way (x2)
With a bow and arrow in hand
I roam all corners of the land.

Un oiseau s’était endormi (bis)
Un jour qu’elle faisait semblant
D’être la Belle au bois dormant.

Et moi, me mettant à genoux (bis)
Bonnes fé’s, sauvegardez-nous ! (bis)
Sur ce cœur j’ai voulu poser
Une manière de baiser.

Alors cet oiseau de malheur (bis)
Se mit à crier au voleur ! (bis)
Au voleur et à l’assassin !
Comm’ si j’en voulais à son sein.

Aux appels de cet étourneau (bis)
Grand branle-bas dans Landerneau (bis)
Tout le monde et son père accourt
Aussitôt lui porter secours.

Tant de rumeurs, de grondements (bis)
Ont fait peur aux enchantements (bis)
Et la belle désabusée
Ferma son coeur à mon baiser.

Et c’est depuis ce temps, ma sœur (bis)
Que je suis devenu chasseur (bis)
Que mon arbalète à la main
Je cours les bois et les chemins.
